Taking the jump from trainee to NQT can seem daunting but moving towards the Easter break of my first year in teaching, I can safely say, when I give myself time to reflect, that I am very proud of everything that I have achieved this year so far. I wouldn’t have been as confident as I was taking on my first position without the training and support I received from School Direct and continue to receive from the Ebor Teaching Alliance. I found the opportunity to experience teaching from quality practitioners on a regular basis incredibly beneficial for my development as well as the strategy of learn, practice and reflect enabling me to really understand the theory behind learning as well as, of course, the children. It has pushed me to constantly strive for improvements, whether large or small, as well as plan and deliver engaging and challenging lessons for my class.
It’s also comforting to know that the Ebor Teaching Alliance support network doesn’t stop after completing your training! With courses and training sessions provided throughout the year, NQTs development and progression is in good hands! Moving forwards, I want to keep building on the already strong relationships I’ve made throughout school and this will provide me with the foundation I need to thrive. There’s no better feeling than getting your first class and to give them everything they deserve I need to keep looking to improve. But, it’s good to know that the current chapter of my career, and the many that follow, are, and will be, well supported by my school and the Ebor Teaching Alliance.

There is no better way to train as a teacher than on the job and under the guidance of outstanding practitioners. Unlike any other course, School Direct is tailored to suit trainees and provides a plethora of opportunities to observe and teach alongside experienced and talented teachers across the Key Stages in a variety of schools in and around York. After studying Education with English Literature as an Undergraduate degree at York St John University, I felt that a school centered approach to teaching offered the best route into my career. School Direct allows for teaching to be specifically tailored to the schools that students are placed in, enhancing the prospect of a job there on completion of training.
Having wanted to become a teacher for so long, no one could have put me off my career choice; however, I would never have believed it could be possible to work so many hours and still have so much to do. It is so important to be motivated to teach but more important to be ready to learn, because as much or as little experience as you arrive with, expect a steep learning curve. The Ebor Alliance is proud to share the wealth of expertise and teachers, mentors, course leaders, and coaches readily go the extra mile to ensure that students are confident to put into practice the skills that they have to offer. As there are only 15 students on the course, schools know us all by name and many course leaders are with us throughout the different stages of our journey. We would all agree that the support network that is provided continues to make our training rewarding and enjoyable.
